The 24-year-old Smith, who has been released by Sunderland, began what we thought was going to be a promising career at Watford before switching to the Stadium Of Light scoring eight goals in 41 appearances for the wearsiders.

Smith's arrival at Pride Park is manager George Burley's third signing of the close season.
