Golden Boy's Deadline Day Moves
One in, two out and a few old boys on the move.
Watford signed full-back Andrew Taylor on a six month loan from Middlesborough, Taylor is an experienced full-back who despite his young age has made 104 appearances. His Boro debut was back in 2004, Malky Mackay was keen to bring in some more experience to help his young side develop and learn from mature professionals such as Taylor.
Andrew Taylor will have friends in the squad, he joins Danny Graham and Josh Walker two other members of Boro's FA Youth Cup-winning squad. Josh Walker only recently joined the Hornets and is likely to have told Taylor how he's settled in.
Rob Kiernan extended his loan with Yeovil and thanks to Scotland's later deadline cut off midfielder Scott Severin was able to agree a move back to Scotland where he signed for Dundee United. Severin's move to Watford never really worked out for him, it's not clear whether it was the move south of the border or early injury issues but the Scotsman was limited to nine first team appearance.
Ex-Watford regulars on the move are Tommy Smith who left at the beginning of last season to join Portsmouth, after Pompey's woeful season and highly documented financial issues Tommy has been sold to local rivals QPR. It's likely that Tommy will get a good reception when he returns to Vicarage Road. Two ex-centre backs are currently on the hunt for a new club, last season's skipper Jay Demerit is still on the available. Jay said there have been clubs interested but none at the standard he wants, the American is keen to sign for a top flight club in England or across Europe. Yesterday Danny Shittu was released by Bolton, since leaving Watford in 2008 Shittu only managed 10 first team appearance for Bolton. He had hoped his World Cup displays may see his get more action or a club to come in for him pre the transfer window closing, but no offers came in and he was released.
Two ex-loaness have been on the move, Tom Cleverly who regularly impressed last season and helped Watford stay up has joined Wigan Athletic on loan, the move will give him the opportunity to gain first team experience in the Premiership. The other player on the move was Jermaine Pennant who was on loan at Vicarage Road from Arsenal back in 2002-03, he returned to England when he signed for Stoke City from Real Zaragoza on loan.
Good luck to new and old Hornets with their new ventures.
