Spotland chairman Chris Dunphy, whose side currently top League Two, said: "Watford made us a very good offer for Will, which after considering a number of factors we agreed to accept.
"One of the factors considered was the player's wish to play at a higher level and we could not ignore the fact that the player would be out of contract at the end of the season.
"Will's move to Watford brings with it financial stability until the end of the season and in addition we will benefit from progress made by both Watford and Will and any future move that Will may make."
