I'd like to start this week by thanking you for your great contribution to the penalty shoot out after the
When we realised that we were definitely in the play-offs and that automatic promotion was out of reach, we had a contingency plan for the two ganes in four days over the holiday period.
We planned to use it as practice for the play-off situation we'll be facing in May. When you've got as many young players in the team as we have and a manager who's also inexperienced in these situations, it's important to be as well prepared as you can.
With that in mind, we decided to use the games against Wolves and
I wanted to put the players and staff under as much pressure as I could before each of the games because when it comes to the real thing, we won't get another shot at it.
I'm not daft enough to think I've got all the answers, so I've also been speaking to several different people about their experiences in the play-offs and in high-pressure tournaments. The penalty shoot-out idea came from Sir Clive Woodward.
Overall, I thought it worked very well on Monday. I learned a lot about the players, staff and myself and the way we all operate in pressure situations. We've taken a lot of positives from it - as well as a lot of things that we won't do when it comes down to it for real.
Over the weekend, we've gone a goal down, been a goal up, had a man sent off, started two halves poorly and two really well, had penalties missed and penalties scored so I think it's fair to say that most bases have been covered!
From a squad point of view, all the players have proved once again that they can come into the side and do more than a job. As I've said all along, it's a squad game and everybody plays a part - which you, the fans, did brilliantly at the end for the penalty shoot out on Monday.
Let's all keep it up through to May!
Come on!
