"We need to continue developing in the big games"

Last updated : 14 April 2006 By Gary Calder

Sunday's game against Luton showed us again the importance of making sure that we're in a match from the kick-off through to the end of injury time. For a period of 25 minutes we weren't in control and it was only a matter of time before Luton scored.

We then came back so strongly at the end of the game that they didn't get out of their own half in the last 15 minutes. During that spell, Marlon Beresford made two fantastic saves and we had a goal disallowed so, on another day, we could have won it.

Had we done so, I would still have felt the same disappointment, though, because results sometimes cover for below-par performances –you can get carried away with emotion after getting three points.

From this point through to the end of the season, I think we need to continue developing in the big games. I'm always saying that we're getting better but the last 10 games have been building up to this point where every game is now a pressure game – almost like a new season starting now because of the expectation we place on ourselves and that coming from outside the club.

The last time that we had a period of a few games without a win, we then went and won six league matches on the spin back at the beginning of the year so a winning run would not be something new to us.

It's great that we can now say we're already definitely in the play-offs at the very least. Back in August, if every Watford fan had been told we would be in this position with four games still to go, they wouldn't have believed it – and we're still with a chance of automatic promotion.

I can't emphasise enough, the credit that our players and staff deserve for getting so far. It's already a big achievement for this club, for the Chairman, board and everybody connected with Watford FC.

Of course, all it does is open the door to the next league and we've got to make sure that we're good enough to walk through that door now and go up a level.

For me, this is a brilliant time of year – the sun is starting to come out, we're in an excellent position in the league and we've two big clubs to face over the weekend.

They are teams who would have expected to turn us over but that's not been the case so far this season. I'm thrilled that we've got two games in a short space of time - the players' fitness levels will be a big advantage to us.

We know we can count on your support from now through to the end of the season, whenever that may be!

Come on!
