Former Watford, Norwich and Wales striker Iwan Roberts has revealed he was treated for skin cancer towards the end of last season.
The veteran forward, who was released after seven years at the Norfolk club this summer, had surgery during March to remove a mole on his right forearm which had been diagnosed as a malignant melanoma.
Roberts, 35, initially kept details of his treatment private, but has included reflections on the ordeal in his forthcoming book 'All I Want For Christmas...'.
Extracts from the publication, written with journalist and Canaries fan Karen Buchanan, appeared in the Eastern Daily Press, and Roberts recalled the moment when he was told he had skin cancer.
"I switched my mobile phone on and there was a message from the doc,'' reflected Roberts.
"It said, 'Robbo, it's the doctor here. It's imperative that you call me back straight away. I've got then results from your test, it's a malignant melanoma and we need to remove it as soon as we can.'
"I was driving the car at the time. The first thing that went through my mind was that [team-mate] Neil Emblen's mum died of cancer two years ago and I can remember one day that when I was itching it and Neil said, 'Don't do that. That's how mum started'.
"You start looking at the kids differently and thinking the worst case scenario.
"I went in on the Thursday to have it taken out. The surgeon had a good look at it and he said, 'By the looks of it we have got it at an early stage which was a good thing'.
"Once they had taken the mole out I felt so much better, but then I got a phone call he said they might have to take it bit more tissue out to make sure we've got it all.
"He said there was a 20% chance that it might come back so I have got to go for check-ups for the next five years."
