Uefa praises England fans

The reputation of the travelling English fans had gone before them and Uefa chiefs had warned that Sven Goran Eriksson's men could face expulsion from the tournament if there were more violent scenes.

There were some incidents down on the Algarve, but there was no signs of any trouble in or around England's matches in the competition.

The FA, along with England police, have been praised for their handling of the situation - with all signs of any future ban now seemingly behind them.

Uefa director of communications William Guillard led the praise for the England faithful who have now proved themselves to be some of the best fans around.

"We must congratulate The FA and the British authorities," said Guillard.

"They have taken steps to improve the behaviour of England fans with banning orders and have controlled their travelling supporters.

"We have seen the success in Portugal. The England fans deserve nine out of ten for behaviour.

"On one day in our fan park in Lisbon there were 5,000 supporters, of which two thirds were English.

"They drank 6,000 pints of beer between them and there wasn't a single incident.

"We have seen more families than ever. We can be optimistic for the future."
