Scunthorpe played very well, and it is fair to say they dominated throughout the game. Scunny went 1-0 up through the superb Cliff Byrne, Michael O’Conner took a set-piece which the Watford defence failed to clear and as the ball came out to Byrne he volleyed home in the 28th minute.
As Malky stood on the side line waiting to inspire his team with his team talk he would have been disappointed to see the Golden Boys concede again. Adrian Mariappa tried to clear the ball but only found Martyn Woolford who doubled Scunthorpe’s lead.
In the second half, Watford tried to get back into it but to no avail, Stephen McGinn was looking to score for third consecutive game only to miss a good opportunity as did Jordan Mutch. Towards the end Mariappa could have made up for his earlier mistake when he connected with his head only to see the ball fly over the bar.
Malky will try to pick up his side before a tricky game next week against Derby away.
