Hornets Knocked Out of Lower League Opposition
The Golden Boys went down 2-1 to League One Notts County, Malky Mackay made five changes from the team that drew with Hull on Saturday. Even with those changes Watford dominated the first half but like the Coventry game failed to take advantage of all the possession.
The five changes Malky made saw Scott Loach and Danny Graham drop to the bench, whilst John Eustace, Lee Hodson and Martin Taylor were rested. Troy Denney got his first start in Watford colours and young Adam Thompson came in at right back. Unfortunately new singings Jordon Mutch and Josh Walker were ineligible; Mutch due to loan agreement and Waker as he was cup-tied.
Watford were incredible in the first half and created 13 chances but failed to hit the back of the net, going into the second half they looked comfortable and as if it was just a matter of time until they scored. That all changed when fan's favourite Ben Davies scored a free-kick early in the second half, the Hornets were left shell-shocked and the young side failed to get back into rhythm. County doubled their lead in the 67th minute when Kevin Smith scored.
Troy Deeney had a good game, he impressed during the first half where he had a couple of good opportunities only for keeper Nelson to prevent him opening his Watford goal account. Deeney finally got the better of Nelson when he headed in a Danny Graham cross with 12 minutes left on the clock. Watford tried to find a second but to no avail and found themselves heading out of the cup, to make matters Danny Graham hobbled off just before the end.
Malky will have to get his team to forget about the defeat and get ready for Leeds who also went out the cup going down 2-1 at home to Leicester. Hopefully Graham was just taken off as a precaution, it will be a real blow if he doesn't feature on Saturday.
