Matthew Spring: Gave Watford the lead.
A first half header by Matthew Spring and a second half penalty save by the evergreen Alec Chamberlain saw Watford extend their unbeaten run to five games after a battling draw against Aston Villa at Boreham Wood last night.

Spring struck on the half hour, heading home with precision after the Villa defence had failed to properly clear a right flank cross from Albert Jarrett.

However the Midlands side, with J Lloyd Samuel making a comeback after three months out injured, recovered sufficiently to restore equality before the break and may have claimed all three points had it not been for the brilliance of Chamberlain who saved a 73rd minute penalty from the Villans Scott Bridges.

The game began at a pulsating pace with the visitors enjoying the earlier ascendancy, and both Craig Gardner and Marc Albrighton tested Chamberlain in the opening ten minutes.

At the other end Jarrett was looking lively and brought the first save of the evening from Scott Taylor in the Villa goal and the ex-Brighton & Hove Albion then followed up with a better effort five minutes later, Taylor doing well to block a low drive.

Thereafter both sides continued to spar with each other before Spring broke the deadlock, with his third reserve goal of the season.

Villa responded in fine fashion and had appeals for a penalty turned down when Tobias Mikaelsson appeared to be tripped by Toumani Diagouraga.

Mikaelsson was not to be denied for long however, and levelled matters three minutes later, powering past a labouring Chris Powell before steering a low shot past Chamberlain.

Villa's scorer might have put his side ahead a minute later, but headed straight at the keeper as he met Albrighton's right-wing cross.

The game failed to maintain the ebb and flow of the first half in the second stanza although the visitors will feel aggrieved they did not return to the Midlands victorious.

Jordan Parkes enhanced his growing reputation by first blocking an Albrighton effort and the emerging 17-year-old starlet then cleared off his own line to deny Samuel midway through the second period, before the latter screwed an effort wide when well placed.

Villa were given a wonderful opportunity to secure victory when Ben Gill, recently returned to Vicarage Road following a loan spell at Nationwide Conference National club, Cambridge United was adjudged to have felled Kabeya, but the veteran Chamberlain was equal to Bridges and a point apiece ensued.
