Watford Res 2 Charlton Athletic Res 1

Last updated : 06 October 2006 By Gary Holmes

After naming a strong looking eleven with plenty of first team experience Watford's Technical Director, Dick Bate must have been hoping for a comfortable home victory, but the visitors, buoyed by an impressive success over Aston Villa in their last outing began the brighter on an autumnal evening in Hertfordshire.

As early as the second minute a fine run and cross by Alistair John on the right found an unmarked Marcus Bent in the six yard box, and the former Everton striker made no mistake, finishing clinically beyond Richard Lee's despairing dive with a well executed mid air volley.

Undeterred, the hosts quickly composed themselves, and after Tamas Priskin had sent a firm header past Darren Randolph in the Charlton goal to restore equality following Anthony McNamee's accurate free-kick, Charlton's early confidence seemed to evaporate.

Watford went on to completely dominate proceedings, with Henderson narrowly failing to covert a Toumani Diagouraga cross, and a Matthew Spring trademark half volley just fizzing over Randolph's cross bar, the highlights of a sustained spell of home domination.

As half time approached Henderson should have edged Watford ahead, but the big striker failed to capitalise on some hesitant defending, and his weak shot offered an opportunity for Uruguayan international, Omar Pouso to clear off the line.

The interval arrived with the Golden Boys firmly in the ascendancy if not numerically in terms of goals, but the scoreline took on a more realistic look twenty minutes into the second half.

An exquisite ball played by the livewire McNamee left Priskin in space but as the young Hungarian International attempted to shoot, he was thwarted by a tug by a retreating Aswad Thomas and the referee immediately pointed to the spot, leaving Henderson to calmly slot past Randolph.

Thereafter, Watford comfortably held on, passing the ball pleasingly without ever seriously looking to add to their account, and the final whistle greeted a third victory in four games, a record that keeps the Golden Boys firmly amongst the front runners this season.
